I’m so excited to share Melissa and Nic’s big day with you! Back in July we shut the shop for a couple of days to focus on this special wedding held on Melissa’s parents farm. Melissa wanted to feature lots of homegrown foliage alongside traditional English blooms including roses, scabious, echinops, agapanthus and veronica.
These fabulous photos by Greg Knight capture their day beautifully! I just wish the website had a scent button because those O’Hara roses smelt heavenly! I’m going to hand over to Melissa and Nic to tell you a bit about their big day now. Enjoy!
How long have you been together?
How did you meet?
When & how did you get engaged?
We got engaged April 2018, while we were skiing in Bulgaria. Having lunch off-piste looking over the mountain and Nic got down on one knee.
Which date did you chose for your wedding day?
Saturday 20th July.
Has it got any special signficance?
Nope just a good day in our summer holidays.
Where did you hold your ceremony & reception?
Ceremony at St Mary’s Church North Marston and the reception at Melissa’s parents farm, Marstonfields Farm.
What made you choose that location?
Melissa has lived their all her life and we both love it and have lots of fond memories there.
What’s involved with having a wedding at home?
A lot of preparation for the big day. We landscaped an area of the farm that hasn’t been touched in over 25 years. We also tried to home make everything such as invites, favours, signs, table centres etc.
Who was involved in planning your wedding?
Us, family and a few close friends.
Did you both have Hen/Stag Do’s?
Yes. Nic went to Prague and Melissa had 3 hen do’s (not intentionally) the main in was in Suffolk, but she also went to La Manga on a Netball tour/ Hen do. Her friends also organised a London Hen do.
How many people did you invite to share your special day?
Day-192 Evening- 300.
Who were your Bridesmaids?
Melissa’s sisters Sophie and Kathryn, cousins; Zoe, Emma and Anna and my best friend Sophie K.
Who were your Best Man/Men & Usher?
Best man was Nic’s Brother Jason, and his Ushers were Hallam, Dan, Chewy, Luke.
What did the Groom wear?
Traditional morning suits with grey pinned trousers and black tails. Suits were brought and a few hired from Formal Tailors in Bicester.
What did your Mum wear?
Mother of the bride wore Navy and yellow dress with a short jacket and fascinator. Mother of the groom wore navy and cream dress with a short jacket and small fascinator.
What theme/colour scheme did you chose?
Green and cream (with a little grey). Because we both love natural colours and we love the outdoors. We also felt that lots of greenery with white flowers and details was every classy.
Did you choose any particular flowers for any reason?
White flowers. Melissa Grannie’s fern as it was a family tradition. Otherwise we were not fussy we just wanted simple but classy and effective.
How did you feel on the morning of your wedding?
Excited and looking forward to seeing everyone and everyone seeing what we had done for our special day.
What did you choose to eat?
Lots of meat: beef, lamb and pork. With salads and fresh beans and potato’s. It was a buffet for each table which was very sociable. For pudding we had mini selections of our favourite puddings, as we could not decide what to have so we wanted a selection of lots as we both love our puddings.
Who made speeches?
Father of the Bride, Groom and Best Man. Lots of tears and some brilliant humour.
Which song did you choose for your ‘First Dance’?
We really struggled with this as we wanted something special but a lot of the songs we loved were to fast, slow or a bit ‘deep’. We think this song will be a song that gets used a lot for weddings but we really enjoyed having a laugh / dance to it, so decided it would be easy to have on our day.
Tom Walker “Just you and I”.
What was your favourite part of the day?
The whole day. The other day someone asked me this and I can’t pin point one part. Every part was different but it was truly the best day of our lives and it was so special having all OUR friends there. We have to keep telling ourselves that all these people were their for us!
What was your one Wedding Day ‘Must Have’?
Take moments to step back and look at what you have created and what everyone is there for. Having photos of ‘things’ as well as people, was very special to us.
Would you change anything or do you have any advice for currently engaged couples?
Enjoy every second it goes fast. I would also highly recommend you to speak to your caterers and ask them to plate up an extra plate or two and put it in the fridge so you can enjoy it the next day or a few days later. We loved our food, but were so busy being entertained we didn’t really get to sit down and enjoy it fully.
Also make sure you give people the task of making sure you have a drink in your hand at all times. We did this and it was brilliant and everyone is so willing to get you a drink!
Would you like to mention any particular wedding suppliers who assisted with your day?
Signature Flowers for flowers. Rhubarb and Ginger for food.
Where are you going on your honeymoon?
We were meant to go to Mauritius, but unfortunately Melissa was very unwell and we had to cancel.
So sorry to hear you missed your Honeymoon. I hope you’re able to book an alternative trip very soon.
Have a great week.
