It’s not all early morning market trips these days (thankfully)!
I thought I’d give you a bit of an insight into our average day… I mean it changes daily and often what’s planned in the morning can’t happen by the afternoon!
So let’s give tomorrow as an example…
My alarm will go off at 6, so as I can get to the shop just after 7 to be ready for the arrival of my Flying Dutchman between 7:15-7:30. Normally I’ve prepared my buying list the night before. This means I’ve gone through the orders for the following 7 days and listed what I need for the following two days of shop orders and looked in advance to see if there is anything we need to get in for weddings or funerals that needs to be open. For example we can’t buy the lily for an all lily coffin spray two days before because the lily will be too tight and we won’t get the look we desire.
So having made us all coffee’s it’s onto the lorry. Straight away I’m distracted by something beautiful that’s inevitably not on my list! And then we start chatting and putting the world to rights… I think it’s essential to be able to chat through what your buying and the industry with your suppliers. Then we go through my list and then I start the real shopping… it’s just like pick and mix really! I always try and get a really good variety of flowers and colours to create the orders for that day and the following day.
Once they’ve gone I normally have a spare half an hour before the girls come in so I check my emails, and do a bit of general admin housekeeping to try and keep some ticks happening on my to do list! I love a list (& a pretty notebook) and generally write my admin to do list before I leave the shop the day before. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the whole list ticked off!
My team arrive between 8-9 and we normally start the day with a coffee and a bit of a chat about what needs to be done and discussing what’s what!
As we’ve just had a flower delivery we will straight away get everything conditioned and into fresh water. Then we can create our gorgeous flower stand. The most satisfying moment of the week is seeing it full to the brim with fresh blooms and foliage’s.
Then we will get the days orders made. These vary hugely in numbers each day and can alter throughout, as orders come in from our website and over the phone. This normally takes us to elevenses! Then we have (another) coffee and whoever is driving that day heads out. Some days they go earlier it just depends if we have specified time deliveries or not.
Whoever’s left in the shop then has a good tidy up, I normally start on admin again whether that is quotes for brides, wedding flower orders or dreaded book keeping – my least favourite part of being my own boss I can assure you!
The girls will then start work on any funeral tributes for the following day. We always try to ensure these are all finished the night before, so as heaven forbid anything happens the next morning, the family won’t be without flowers.
Throughout the day we will all serve customers both in the shop and on the phone. We often make bouquets and gifts whilst you wait, but if you give us half an hour’s notice we’ll have it ready for you!
In a nutshell that’s an average day for us… definitely not a wedding weekend, but our average day during these strange COVID times.
You’ll notice coffee is frequent… caffeine keeps me going!!
Wishing you a wonderful week.
