In November last year, when things were so very different to today, this gorgeous couple married in a romantic church ceremony in Oxfordshire. With excellent forward planning for the potential of rain, their day was full of all the things a wedding day should be, laughter and love! Today it is my pleasure to hand over to Hannah & Mike, to share their very special wedding story with you.
How long have you been together?
We had been together 7 years when Mike proposed and we celebrated our 8th year anniversary just after the wedding.
How did you meet?
We met at work – he invited me out for drinks on Christmas eve and we instantly clicked.
When & how did you get engaged?
I came home from work and Mike had made us dinner for our anniversary, he asked me to go and grab something from the kitchen and when I came back he was down on one knee!
Which date did you chose for your wedding day? Has it got any special signficance?
We chose the 9th November, which gave us enough time to pull everything together without having to wait too long!
Where did you hold your ceremony & reception?
We had our ceremony at Stratton Audley Church, and the reception at Stratton Court Barn. We loved the rustic and intimate feel of the Barn and knew we would be in safe hands with Karin, the wedding co-ordinator.
Who was involved in planning your wedding?
We did most of the planning ourselves, but we roped my mum in to do some of the running around for us.
Did you both have Hen/Stag Do’s?
Hannah – I had my hen do in Birmingham, organised by my sister with a 90’s theme.
Mike – I went on a trip to Budapest organised by my best man.
How many people did you invite to share your special day?
We had 50 to the day, and 100 for the evening.
Who were your Bridesmaids?
My sister and sister in law
Who were your Best Man/Men & Usher?
Mikes best friends
What did Hannah wear?
I wore a fitted wedding dress with a big skirt. I purchased a sparkly belt and had it sewn on to give it the finishing touch and I wore a long length veil with sparkles around the edges.
Where did you find your Wedding Dress?
I purchased my dress from Wed2B. I originally wanted something quite plain, elegant and floaty and tried on a dress which I liked. But I wanted to try on some dresses of different styles just to see what they looked like, and at the last minute, I found another one which I fell in love with!
What did Mike wear?
Mike wore a navy blue Hugo Boss suit hired from Moss Bros, with a grey tweed waistcoat purchased from Cavani. He also wore a crimson Cravat.
What did the Mother of the Bride wear?
My Mum wore a white and navy jumpsuit with a navy blue hat and matching accessories.
What theme/colour scheme did you chose?
We chose dove grey bridesmaid dresses and navy suits, as they were quite subtle colours. We went for white flowers as well as they were very bridal and went well with the colours that we had chosen.
Did you know they type of flowers you wanted?
We chose white flowers as they were simplistic but effective and very bridal.
Hannah, how did you feel when Emma handed you your bouquet on the day?
Is the arch a floral must have at Stratton Court Barn?
Yes, if we had decided to get married at the barn we would have wanted the whole arch covered as a statement piece. However, as we were married in the church, we went for an asymmetric piece, along with white voil wrapped around the remainder of the arch.
How did you feel on the morning of your wedding?
Hannah – I felt very nervous when I first woke up, however once we got to the barn and into the dressing room, my sister managed to calm my nerves by playing some music and roping me into dancing!
Over the course of the morning we could see all the suppliers coming to set up and the barn being decorated, so we knew everything was coming together.
Mike – I felt very calm, my best man was more nervous than I was!
Were there absolute must have wedding photos for you?
We were quite laid back about our photographs and asked the photographer to take lots of candid shots of everyone laughing and talking. It was lovely to see those after the wedding and see everyone enjoying themselves without too much posing.
What was the weather like?
It was a VERY rainy day in November! We knew that there was a risk with a November wedding, so we had made sure that we purchased some matching clear umbrellas, and as it was cold, one of my bridesmaids actually wore leggings under her dress! One of the bonus’s of having a such a rainy day, was that everyone wanted to stay inside which meant that they all enjoyed the music and dancing and it was easy to make sure we got round all of our guests to speak to them.
What did you choose to eat?
We wanted a relaxed feel to the day so we opted for Afternoon Tea (provided by the Chipping Norton Tea Set) and for the evening Muzza Catering provided an “Asian fusion” of curry combinations, with Wraps and Naan’s from their catering van. Both options went down well with our guests.
Who made speeches?
My Sister sang her version of “I want to be like you” from The Jungle Book, but had changed the words to reminisce about when we were growing up and she used to follow me around, pinching all my things! It was brilliant! Mike and his best man also made speeches and there was a lot of laughter that afternoon!
Which song did you choose for your ‘First Dance’?
We chose “I can’t help falling in love with you” by Elvis – because it’s true!
What was your favourite part of the day?
It’s hard to choose as it all went so quickly, but the food was great, our caterers were really flexible in making sure the menu was just what we wanted. We also really enjoyed the band, they were great at getting everyone up and dancing.
Would you change anything or do you have any advice for currently engaged couples?
Don’t stress! Even if things don’t go to plan, you won’t even notice on the day. Just enjoy getting married to each other.
Would you like to mention any particular wedding suppliers who assisted with your day?
Yes all of the suppliers we used were great. Thank you to Emma and the team at Signature flowers, who listened to what we wanted and made really helpful suggestions on the things we were unsure of.
Karin at Stratton Court Barn was great and so incredibly organised that we really didn’t have to worry about anything. And lastly, The Right Hook party band were brilliant, great song choices and energy – it took very little effort to get everyone up and dancing.
Where are you going on your honeymoon?
We booked a cottage in the countryside for a couple of days after the wedding. It was just what we needed to have some time to ourselves after a week of being surrounded by lots of people. We had also planned to visit the Mediterranean later in the year, but with the lockdown situation we have had to postpone this – all the more to look forward to later on!
Thank you so much to Hannah and Mike for sharing their special day.
Wishing you all a fabulous and safe week.
